Competition Brief: What Does Amber Heard Belive?
With the dust settling on the first Amber Heard / Johnny Depp trial, Heard and her new team are rallying for an appeal. Given the incredible landslide of reaction in the court of public opinion, one might question the wisdom of any second round. Still, considering Depp’s own change of fortune after losing in his case against News Group 2018, perhaps there is logic in the pursuit? After all, it was determined that claims of domestic abuse were substantially accurate enough to support publicly calling Depp a “wife beater.” A quick peruse of the latest online coverage of him though suggests that winning the latest case in the United States has been enough to turn public opinion in his favour.
On the other hand, perhaps it’s not a “play” or “strategy” or “guise” or “plan” or anything else malevolent in the mind of Amber Heard. Perhaps she believes that she is a victim deserving of justice like any other citizen and nothing more. After all, she was partially successful in her counter suit meaning their was some validity to her arguments.
This month’s question is: what do you believe, Amber Heard believes? Given all the accusations, the charges, and the verdicts, what, if anything, does she know is a lie? In contrast, what, if anything, does she sincerely believe? If she was given a consequence free opportunity and confessed to you her unfiltered version of the truth as she perceives it, what would she say? Support your essay with a statement of fact.
Statement of Fact
— In 2018, Johnny Depp sued News Group in a British court for defamation and lost the case.
— In 2022, Johnny Depp sued Amber Heard in an American court and won.
In the year 2015, Amber Heard and Depp got married. As per the article published on November 2020 in The Sun cited Depp as wife beater and have described fourteen truthful events in total where Depp has abused Heard. Six of those incidents happened prior their marriage while they were dating and engaged (including the Wino tattoo slap incident in 2013) What was Amber Heard thinking when she knew what she was getting into and allowed herself to get married to Depp?
Any romantic relationship with age gap of 23 years is questionable. Although, many would say age is number and love is blind. Is it? Really? Amber Heard broke her five-year relationship with Tasya Van Ree and Depp broke his long-time relationship of 14 years with Paradis (had two children with her) to make it an official relationship. Despite the hardship with Depp what made Amberto leap into this relationship and even to marry him. Obvious reason for anyone to point out is an absolute shortcut opportunity to riches and fame. The fact is Depp did make calls to bigwigs in Warner Bros to secure the multi movie deal for the role of Mera in Aquaman / Justice League franchise for Amber Heard when she made her audition for that.
It is clear that Amber Heard wants to paint a picture that money or Depp’s wealth is not something that she cared for on termination of her relationship with Depp. Her message is crystal that she should not be considered as a gold digger. However, she has not yet donated. Why is this delay? What is that which is making her to hesitate to donate? To understand that we have understand the nature of movie industry and life of an actress. Value of a movie star stands on the image that they have projected to their fans. However, the stage (Hollywood) set for projection is at the mercy of powerful producer, actors and other influencers. Seven Million dollars for leading an ordinary life by a simpleton would seem like lot of money but for movie stars with their lifestyle it’s nothing. Amber Heard was afraid of her future and was not sure what would happen. Would she be allowed to continue as Mera?
On December 18th of 2018 Amber Heard article was published on Washington Post – Opinion. Although the article was about Women Rights in general but there were also paragraphs with specifics of her experience as a victim of abuse. The paragraph that reeled in the defamation law suit from Depp; “I became a public figure representing domestic abuse, and I felt the full force of our culture’s wrath for women who speak out.”
Although the argument in court was on Amber’s right for free speech or not, Depp considered the forced resignation from his role as Grindewald in ‘Fantastic Beasts 3’ as direct consequence of the Washington post and the article from The Sun. At this juncture one must understand that Depp already lost the libel trial against The Sun and its Publisher who have established his image as wife beater. The defamation suit against Heard was only way Depp could re-establish his image.
The definition of domestic violence against women has to understood properly. In the patriarchal society we lived women were groomed to be a good wife and mother. There was a time when innocent women were not even given voting rights even in a great nation like America. Though, it was in the dark times family honour was valued. A couple ideally lived for their family. It was a time when men dominated the society and restricted women’s options. Can we portray Amber Heard as that kind women whose voices were not heard and whose tears were not wiped? A recording of conversation Amber Heard speaking to Depp submitted in court says “You can tell people it was a fair fight, and then see what the jury and judge thinks. Tell the world, Johnny. Tell them, ‘Johnny Depp, I, a man, I’m a victim, too, of domestic violence, it’s a fair fight,’ and see how many people believe or side with you.”
Even if Amber said it as a joke, it certainly indicates that she is not ignorant of the world and certainly not a helpless person. Depp is no saint as he has history drugs and alcohol but none of his ex-wives had portrayed him as violent man. Court has ruled both of them for defaming each other. God knows the amount of tutoring their lawyers gave to say the right things and express the right emotions in front of the Judges, jury and media. Afterall they are very good actors to execute that. All this struggle could be just to keep up their image to survive as celebrities.
Should we even consider Hollywood actors/actress as a standard for social morals? Is it really ok to take drugs and alcohol to destress? Is it ok to terminate long standing relationships/ family just for a pretty face? Is it ok to marry a father figure for career advancement? The list just goes on and on. Whether it is Depp or Amber being a fan is only for their acting is just enough. Their real life and reel life are two different dimensions.
In the year 2017 Amber Heard divorce with Depp was finalized and a settlement of $7Million was made to her. Amber Heard said it was never about the money and would donate it to the Charities. However, she could not pay all of it to the charities. As of now that payment is still pending. What was Amber Heard thinking when she announced that she would donate every dime of her divorce settlement to charities?
